A Big Surf Day In NJ

Disclaimer: Listen, west coasters, the east coast does not have waves. Actually, we don’t even have an ocean. That body of water they call the “Atlantic” is actually a giant front-lawn kiddie pool. I photoshopped each of these photos, so DO NOT come to New Jersey looking to surf.

Having said that, last week that kiddie pool delivered some front yard fun. I do wish I had a better lens (Canon please feel free to send me one, and in return I will take photos with it/continue to tell everyone how much I love your products). Photography is a hobby of my mine, which is very beneficial to my friends. They get awesome pictures of themselves, and I get to do something I thoroughly enjoy. However, there are some extra benefits for me.

Here is where you get to enjoy the photos, and you have no obligation to read on. If you do that, however, you will miss out on some great guidance on what to do with your surf photos (the extra benefits). Do you take photos at parties, on vacation, of your daily life (yes, this includes instagram)? Well, don’t cheat yourself, and apply my surf photography tactics to whatever you do.

Create your own blog/website. This way you consistently have your own place for all of your photos. I looked up some keywords like “New Jersey surfing” and “surf photography” using Google’s Keyword Tool, which both have great search numbers and low competition. The competition is dominated by pretty big sources, but nothing with news or authorship is showing, so I have a chance for Google search results. Insert these keywords in  natural fashion, and we having begun optimization.

Let’s Share Our NJ Surf Photographs

Not all the people I shot surfing are on Facebook, but I know one is and he will like/share the photo (you better, Will, or no more photos of you). Our friends and family members will probably comment on the great wave, which will help my status update gain edgerank resulting in more exposure.

Surfing is a niche, which means you have a readily defined audience. I can hashtag words like “surfing,” “New Jersey,” “photography,” “beach,” “waves,” and much more on Twitter and Instagram, which will give me exposure to people who enjoy these niches. This will result in more likes, followers, and sharing. The key here is to think of every element of surfing from the wetsuit the surfer is wearing to the board he is riding to the spot they are at (word to the wise: keep it general. If you name a secret spot, you are dead meat).

Did you tweet  just once? Bad move. Schedule a week’s worth of Tweets with each hashtag once a day. Also, find users to @ reply to. Both Instagram and Twitter are filled with people who have more followers than you. In the case of Twitter,  schedule @ replies to these super users each day until they do respond or ReTweet. Once you see they did, then remove the extra Tweets, so you don’t annoy them!

Google+ is overlooked completely, but is crucial to search engine optimization. Each +1 you get helps your ranking, so spread your content out. There are a variety of Communities to post photography to, and there are Communities focused on surfing. USE THESE COMMUNITIES! When you insert your link choose a different photo for your profile than on each Community, so it doesn’t look like you are posting the same thing over and over again. Use the same hashtag rules with Twitter. You can also use Do Share to schedule your profile posts for each day ahead of time. This will give you more time take new photos or write a new blog post!

Here is where I leave you to do your own research. Look for forums! Stay active in them, and you will gain regular commenters and followers. Local Swell, NY NJ Surf…yup, they are out there and you need to get on them.

Golden Rule: You better share, tweet, like, +1, and comment on other people’s photos if you want them to do the same. Reply and thank those who do the same for you.

One Of The Best Blog Posts Of 2012

Yes, that is a bold statement, but there are several reasons why I believe Transworld Surf has one of the best blog posts I have seen in 2012. Besides being a surfer there are actual values I factored in as a digital marketer, so here is the run down.

The Hottest Girls In Pro Surfing 2012 Edition | Transworld SURF

1. The Title is “THE HOTTEST GIRLS IN PRO SURFING 2012 EDITION.” Right away I fairly know what I am going to see, which is either picture or video of gorgeous girl surfers or girls with sunburn. The words”2012 EDITION” leads me to believe there are more posts like it, so if I enjoy this one I can search for the other. Lists make great posts because if a reader disagrees they can dispute in the comments section.

How To Blog

2. The content is killer with video, photos, and images. The person who wrote the descriptions obviously surfs because they use technical terms and use name dropping without being egotistic. The written content also allows for a chance for SEO. The video is not self hosted so it will not slow down the site, and by using several other people’s videos they are not biased. My only problem with the images is I believe they should have been in a lightbox. Other than that one opinion, hot damn. I do not mind seeing good looking girls for twenty pages.

3. Yes, that last line said “twenty pages.” Instead of one long post, readers (or viewers) can click to see the next girl or skip by choosing a photo icon or number on the list. Look at the url and you will notice the last number change, which means a new page of content. This adds to SEO because the more useful content Google can crawl the better. This may not work with everyone’s site because if you notice the “Like”, “Tweet”, and “Pinterest” counts stay the same for each page, which means you are promoting the post not just the single page. Very clever Transworld.

The Perfect URL

The Perfect URL

4. Who is going to share this? Surfers. If Kelly Slater shares this it will instantly blow up the internet even though Transworld already does get an enormous amount of traffic. Guys. Whether you surf or not these girls are good looking. Surfing is also an interesting sport, so you might get hooked. The girls. Those girls will share that post on all of their social media outlets for bragging rights, and Transworld will reap all the benefits of free promotion. Also, links to the girls sites and social media networks are posted so they should return the favor. Transworld is a credible site that could help their pagerank. The companies. Sponsors will share their new starlett’s fame boasting she is part of their crew. The filmmaker. People who otherwise wouldn’t take notice may see how awesome their video skills are. If they host the video, then they reap the benefits in their views count and possibly traffic as well.

Just as a site overall I like the clean layout that doesn’t distract visitors from the content. There is only one thing on the side, and it connects visitors to other Transworld related outlets! I can’t go any further because I can go on about the share buttons and their placement, navigation bar and page names…. subscription form with free fins!

If you have a better blog post I would love to see it.

Living The Dream In New Jersey

This right here is the product of hard work. Take a long hard look at this custom skimboard, and keep in mind this is what you get when you stay true to yourself and your goals.

In the beginning of January I honored ToeKneeABC123.com as my favorite project of 2011. He truly does put his all into his video production, and deserves the recognition. Recently he was picked up by ZAP Skimboards as his new board sponsor and that little gem up there is his custom stick.

I am sssoooooo stoked for ToeKnee, and I will be launching some new projects with him in the future.

New York Skating with 5Boro

Last week I was invited to the premiere of 5Boro’s new video “Join Or Die”. After 5 years in the making, “Join Or Die” made its debut to a huge crowd at Santos Party House and was well worth the wait.

Promo Video For A Philly And NJ Skater

Moving is horrible…well the whole process of moving into a new place. Finally the internet is hooked up at my new spot, and I am ready for some updates.

Skateboard Riding: Colin Keaton from Daniel Parkview on Vimeo.

Above is a video of my good friend Colin Keaton (Keats). He is a pretty damn good skateboarder from New Jersey, but currently resides in Philly. See if you recognize any of your skate spots in the video and be sure to give his sponsor, Pro Skateboard Shop in Belmar, NJ, some love.

Superbowl 2012 Commercials

Super Bowl commercials are better than the game. Honestly, I didn’t even finish watching the second half because I wanted to watch some HBO and Showtime shows. However, Doritos, Volkswagen, and many others were pretty good this year, but I love Ferris Beuller’s Day Off so that takes my pick for right now. What’s your favorite?

The Best Skimboarding Video Website…EVER

Well back to work in 2012!!! Most websites honored 2011 with a “Top 10”or “What We Learned” post, but I decided to take one story in particular from 2011 and give you some insight as to what I do.

ToeKneeABC123.com ….yes that is the actual url, and when I met ToeKnee he said the “ABC123” was to remember to keep things simple. Yes, this makes complete sense. ToeKnee is a skimboarder currently living in California, but our story is from when he still lived in New Jersey and takes place a week before the Sea Bright Skim Bash.

Unfortunately, ToeKnee did not hire me right away and attempted to make toekneeabc123.com on his own (which was at least a month of production, and I know more but ToeKnee won’t admit it) in hopes to have a launch party for the site during the Skim Bash along with premiering a new skimboarding video. This did not work out too well, so after about three hours spent with ToeKnee, his girlfriend (Steff Mags who you can see in on his site), and his dog Lemon trying to fix unending glitches we decided to start from scratch.

I want to interpret my clients’ personal lives into their online ventures, and I had tons of fun interpreting ToeKnee. For those of you who don’t know much about skimboarding, it is very technical and fun sport, therefore I wanted technical features in a fun setting. ToeKnee is a very artistic, so the icons used on the site (which are also tattooed on Toe Knee’s arm) were hand drawn, and since the doodles are so colorful I decided to go with a plain white background reducing chance for distraction.

ToeKnee wanted a way to make certain videos such as contests or full length movies stand out, which is why I added a featured post scroll directly under the site’s banner. On your left you will see a link to ToeKnee’s Facebook as well as an RSS subscription, which with follow you down the site…and on your right the sidebar features a few banner ads (yes, you can make money off your passion!!!!) and a nice little surf report provided by Swell Info. There will be a short pit-stop here….

OK, so I  can go in depth about how I chose the hosting for videos in order to make streaming quick and HD, or even how ToeKneeABC123.com was optimized to drive traffic and is now a leading site for skimboarding. However, for now all I want to do is honor ToeKnee for his hard work and dedication to get his site launched and for choosing me to help him accomplish an amazing site within a week. Needless to say (not really needless because you probably forgot about why it needed to be done in a week, but I couldn’t think of a better opener) the site made its debut to a large audience of skimboarding beach bums making the party a success.

ToeKnee continues to post regularly and his audience grows steadily with loyal followers. I only hope I can help more dedicated creatives successfully express their passions online throughout 2012.
