Gorgeous Design but Bad SEO with Adobe Muse

Bad SEOAdobe Muse featured this absolutely gorgeous website by Ali Pordeli on Facebook recently. However,  I have seen a few sites like this, even some from digital marketing agencies (I won’t name names, but they did recently change their design), and they are just bad SEO designs.

I totally understand the continuous, active scrolling is attractive. However, without multiple pages, what do search engines have to crawl? It looks like there may be enough written content on this site for one page. In fact, this blog post might have more written content on it.

Now, I do not mean to bash this site because, honestly, his design skills are way above mine. This site is truly beautiful, and at least it isn’t flash (check out jimcarrey.com for an example of flash and bad SEO…but he doesn’t really need SEO).

(scroll over…the site is iframed)

How to Fix Bad SEO

My suggestions for Ali would be to keep the scrolling, but when you get to the “Services” section the right side section with description like, “Hand drawn and computer generated illustrations – children’s book illustrations – magazine illustrations.” should be bulleted and link to another page for each service. You can go design crazy on these pages showcasing the attractive images and WRITING some descriptions. He could easily make over ten extra pages that will showcase his talents and help give his great landing pages to send to prospective clients.

I have a little gripe with Adobe Muse because it really is a great service, but they don’t have a blogging platform. I used Muse to create LiferMedia.com and then iframed my Tumblr into the blog section, which, yes, was bad SEO practice. I was determined to build a Muse site when the service was in beta and free, and that is the best I could come up with.

Anyway, I tip my hat to Ali Pordeli for his talents, and hope he implements some SEO tactics soon.

Very good ideas, Michael, and I agree wholeheartedly with your post. How many “designers” realise that search engine bots are actually looking for “Text” and “optimized images” to crawl. When most “designer” sites are read in a text browser, they fall flat. They either make no sense, or there’s actually very little semantic text for the engines to spider.
Finding the balance between great design and good SEO is the key. I’m actually going through this article on quick sprout: http://www.quicksprout.com/the-advanced-guide-to-seo/, and I would happily pass it on to Adobe Muse and their followers. 🙂

  2. Thanks Cyj. I appreciate the feedback. Adobe Muse is aware of the article and some of them did not like it. Luckily, one of them did, and I am working on some projects with them.

It is true that a website’s design affect a lot upon its position in search engines. But in some cases, designs of the websites are outstanding but poor SEO policy can cause lower ranking. Both website’s design and SEO policy must be search engines and users friendly so that search engines don’t feel difficulty in crawling and indexing, and users don’t face any difficulty while getting information. In 2014, it should be first priority of website’s owners to have quality SEO campaign by writing organic and natural contents.

  4. Steph, I completely agree. User Interface should be your main priority. If people don’t like your site, then why should search engines offer it to them? It is simple things like using the same color for action items that can completely change the journey for a visitor. Adobe Muse has the design part down, but the UI needs the work.

The problem with SEO in Muse isn’t that it was incapable of good SEO; the problem was that most of the designers had no idea how to code. Learning SEO and the importance of it comes along with learning code (it did for me at least) so not only did no one know how to write it, no one knew what to even do with it. Fortunately for the Muse community, advanced-seo.j-26.com now exists 🙂
